An early 19th century portrait miniature, the oval quarter length portrait in oils on paper of a young man in a dark blue coat, white shirt and cravat, and wearing glasses, within a finely decorated gilt brass mount with a leaf and dart inner edge and repeating scrolling and foliate motifs around it and a milled border, all within a plain rosewood frame with a conforming gilt brass loop handle with decorated bail. Condition: Overall good, the painting is in reasonably good condition with no significant damage, there is a very small tear at 4 o’clock and the varnish has somewhat discoloured and has a fine craquelure, the mount is in good condition with a few marks on it consistent with age, the frame is in very good condition, and at some point the back has been re-taped with brown tape. Overall this charming miniature has a pleasing appearance and character, redolent of the French Restoration era.
