G Médecin: A French harbour scene of boats at the quayside of an Alpes-Maritimes seaside town, depicting motorised pleasure craft and fishing vessels with mountains in the distance, in oils on a board and presented in a carved wood frame. Signed lower right. French, 1930’s. Sight 11” by 14½”
The artist: whilst we have not been able to find out anything about this artist, it is highly likely that he (or she) is a member of the extended Médecin family from the Alpes-Maritimes, in particular Nice, where two of the clan (Jean and his son Jaques) were mayor between 1928 and 1990. Other family members were lawyers and architects.
Condition: Overall very good, the painting is in very good condition with no damage, the colours, whilst from a somewhat muted palette, are fresh and the frame is is good condition and is almost certainly the original, and overall the painting gives us a glimpse of the life of a seaside town on the Côte d’Azur in the interwar period.
