A Late Victorian Oak Dial Clock

This item has been sold.

A late Victorian dial clock, the off-white 12” dial with Roman numerals and an outer minute track, spade hands and right centre winding arbour, marked to the centre SHEPPARD BROS. WALSALL., and with a crown and BY APPOINTMENT, to an eight day fusee movement with a pendulum, within a broad oak surround with a brass bezel, English, circa 1880.

Condition: Excellent, the clock is in very good condition with no damage to the case and few signs of wear to the dial; the movement has been fully serviced and overhauled and is in full working order. The clock comes supplied with a winding key.

The ‘By Appointment’ claim is, in our considered view, spurious. In our opinion, Sheppard Brothers were a hardware store in Walsall, Staffordshire, and it is unlikely that any member of the Royal Family would have shopped there, however it is likely that the local town hall had an account with the store, and that Messrs Sheppard decided, by a process of association, to link local government with royalty.
