After William Shayer (1787-1879), a small oil painting on wooden panel of a coastal scene, probably on the English east coast, showing fishing vessels drawn up onto a beach near a breaker with figures around them, against a background of low cliffs and rising clouds, apparently unsigned, English circa 1860, framed in a later gilt frame. Panel: 10” by 12”.
Condition: Excellent, the painting is in very good condition with no paint loss or damage, it is in remarkably clean condition with bright, fresh colours, the frame, which is probably mid 20th century, is in good condition, and overall the painting has a charming appearance despite its small size.
Attribution and date: the painting is what is generally known as ‘after’ or perhaps ‘school of’ William Shayer, who was known for painting similar subjects. The painter of this particular work, whilst anonymous, was obviously skilled at rendering a busy scene onto a small panel, and probably painted for a living as opposed to for personal pleasure. There is a typed label on the reverse suggesting a date of around 1880, in our opinion the painting is a little earlier than this, hence the given date of circa 1860.

Height: 30cm (12”)
