A mid 19th century walnut chess and work table, the square top hinged to the centre with moulded edge and inlaid with contrasting squares in rosewood and birch within a border of faux bamboo inlay with ebony and boxwood stringing, opening to an interior with a lift-out tray comprising eight small lidded compartments and two padded pin cushions, and with two small drawers to the underneath, the whole raised on a tripod with a turned baluster shaft, probably southern French, circa 1830. Supplied with a key.
Condition: Overall very good, the table is in good condition with no damage, it stands well with no undue wobbling, the top is hinged to around ⅖ and ⅗, there has been a little raising of the top on the right hand side of the top, there is a small section of discolouration to the top edge, however overall this is a charming piece of provincial French furniture, with a delightful appearance and pleasing warm colours.
