A mid Victorian oil painting on canvas of a girl in a maroon dress with a shawl and wearing a bonnet, and carrying a basket of peaches and grapes, in a rustic setting with a wall and landscape beyond, monogrammed and dated lower right JC 1866, in an associated carved giltwood swept frame. English, 1866.
Canvas size: 51 x 61 cm (20″ x 24″)
James Cole was active between around 1856 to 1893 and is best known for paintings of this nature, figures (especially young women) in rural or coastal settings, and this model features in a number of his paintings. During his lifetime he exhibited over sixty paintings at the Royal Academy.
