A winter scene in oils on board by Andries Vermuelen, with figures on a frozen river including men around a carthorse, women taking water from a hole in the ice, and two figures skating, by a church with trees and further figures, under a cloudy sky. Signed lower right and framed in a later swept giltwood frame. Dutch, circa 1790.
Board size: 61 x 41 cm (24” x 18”)

Condition: Overall the painting is in very good condition, with no paint loss or other surface damage; the colours remain reasonably fresh and the image is crisp. The frame has some small losses to the structure, and minor gilding loss, however it is in good condition overall.

Andries Vermeulen was born in Dordrecht, Dutch Republic, in March 1763, the son of artist Cornelis Vermeulen, who taught him. He was especially known for painting landscapes and in particular works depicting figures in winter scenes on frozen rivers and lakes. He later moved to Amsterdam, where he died in 1814.
