Silver Plated Items

Silver plate falls into two categories: Old Sheffield Plate and Electroplate. Old Sheffield Plate was a process invented by Thomas Bolsover in 1742 by fusing silver onto copper using heat and pressure. The manufacturing process was often more expensive than making the same object in silver, but with cheaper materials. This was superseded with the invention of silver plating by electrodeposition, perfected by Elkington, which became commercially viable by the 1840’s.
